Lakers Pick Protection

Post#1 » by MGTOW » Wed Jun 24, 2015 3:23 am

2016 first round draft pick to Philadelphia
L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Philadelphia (via Phoenix) protected for selections 1-3 in 2016 and 1-3 in 2017 and unprotected in 2018 [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012; Milwaukee-Philadelphia-Phoenix, 2/19/2015]

2018 first round draft pick to Orlando
If at least two years after the L.A. Lakers conveyed a 1st round pick to Philadelphia, then the L.A. Lakers' 1st round pick to Orlando protected for selections 1-5 in 2018 and unprotected in 2019; if the L.A. Lakers have not conveyed a 1st round pick to Philadelphia by 2017, then the L.A. Lakers will instead convey their 2017 2nd round pick and 2018 2nd round pick to Orlando [L.A. Lakers-Phoenix, 7/11/2012; L.A. Lakers-Orlando, 8/10/2012; Milwaukee-Philadelphia-Phoenix, 2/19/2015]

Ok with that in mind ok there are Rumors about the 6ers wanting to move up for the 2nd pick. Are there rules that keep the Lakers from adding protection to the pick the 76's own for the next 3 year to become say top 28 Protected and making it so the pick Orlando owns now becomes 2 2nd rounders instead of a first?

The Lakers can't adjust the protections without some other action first. They were locked in as part of the previous trades.

Now, if there was to be another trade between the the teams, they could make an adjustment as part of that deal.

But they can't just change what was previously agreed upon on their own whim. Nor would the other teams likely agree to it, if they could.

is there anywhere, where it is stated i looked up the Stepien rule and it said nothing about not be able to change protection on the picks. Is there another rule i am not seeing?

I'd have to find it, but logic says a team can't randomly decide to change protections without the other side agreeing as well. In addition, parameters of a trade can't be adjusted after the trade has already taken place.

Logic and contracts dont go hand in hand. While this might be in the spirit of the trade does not mean it how it work unless there is a rule that says it or it had to be put in writing. While i am sure the this will not happen because the Lakers are prob not that shady of a Org but i can see someone like 76ers and them all about the numbers and everything else be darn think about pulling something like this off.

Maybe someone else can find out where it is listed, because I don't. Nor do I care enough to look it up. Just rest assured that you can't change the parameters of a trade once all parties, the League included, have signed off.

Some rules (like these pertaining to the draft) are defined and buried in the NBA Constitution, By-laws, and league memos. Unlike the CBA, those are rarely seen by the public, and there are a ton of them.
