When do you have to decide on Team Options?

I assume this has to be before free agency begins.

It depends on the specific contract language, but the latest date this year is 6/29/16.

Sometimes players and teams agree on an earlier date, but this year everyone was due on 6/29.

Many people call Partial/Non-Guaranteed contracts Team Options, but they really aren't. And their dates are all over the place. I wrote a piece for the site that you can find by searching my author name on all things Options if you want to learn more. :)

Interesting because I know the Suns are going into PJ Tucker's final year, and that only $1.5 million of it is guaranteed. I was thinking there was also a team option. But perhaps if they just wanted to waive him, they'd just pay $1.5 like a buyout? Do you know if his is a team option as well?

Respectfully, that's not accurate. The CBA sets a "latest date possible," but every contract with an option to be decided might have it on an earlier date. Indeed, this season, I know that the Mavs had 3 player option deadlines on June 22 (Dirk, Parsons, D Will).

Really poor phrasing on my part. I meant in terms of Team Options only. Just a quirk of this year, but all TOs this year were due on 6/29. A couple of teams have acted earlier (MEM and MIN), but they had until 6/29 to act.

That link explains just about everything you could ever want to know about Options and the difference between a Team Option and a Partial/Non-Guaranteed Contract.

In the case of Tucker, he is partially guaranteed. He gets $1.5 million for this season guaranteed (barring some unexpected buyout agreement) and his full $5.3 million guarantees on 6/30.
