Did I Do This Correct? Team Salary Minimum

Post#1 » by TheBallDoLie » Mon Feb 26, 2018 4:21 am

Can someone tell me if I did this correctly? I don't expect you to do the math like I did(though that would be great lol), just look over my process and see if I did it right. I feel like I did but for some reason I am second guessing myself, figured someone can confirm I am right. So I tried to figure out how far the Bulls are back from the salary floor of 89,183,700.

1) First I took all the cap figures of the players(dead money or active) that have counted against the team salary since day 1. That got me: 70,723,828

2) Then I took Nikola Mirotic's salary and multiplied that by 61%. I did that because before he was traded he was on the Bulls for 107(out of 177) days (Oct 17th -Jan 31st). That got me 7,556,497.

3) Then I took Omer Asik's salary and multiplied that by 39%. I did that because he came through trade Feb 1st, and will be on team until end of the regular season. 70 days. That got 4,132,247.

4) Then I took Noah Vonleh's salary and multiplied that by 36%. I did that because he was traded to Bulls Feb. 8th. That's 63 days, 36%. That got me 1,247,625

5) Then I took Tony Allen's cap hit of 1,471,382 and multiplied that by 39%. I did that because he was traded to Bulls Feb 1st. He was waived Feb 9th and cleared waivers. So Feb 1st to end of regular season is 70 days. That got me 573,839.

6) Then I took Jameer Nelson's cap hit of 1,429,818 and multiplied that by .04%. I did that because he was traded to Bulls Feb 1st, but was then traded Feb 8th. That's 7 days, .04%. That got me 56,547.

7) Lastly I took Willie Reed's cap hit of 1,471,382 and multiplied that by 36%. I did that because he was traded to Bulls Feb 8th, then waived and cleared waivers. That's 63 days, Feb 8th to end of season. That got me 529,698.

Then I just took all those numbers and added them together and figured out Chicago is about 4.3 million away from the floor. Did I do that correctly? Would kind of suck if I did all that and was wrong lol But I am curious to do this correctly.

I didn't run the math, but the process seems generally correct.

I would suggest that instead of doing it by %, you do it by actual days. That is how the NBA calculates it. That would get you closer to an exact number.
