Rondo to Lakers for $9M

Post#1 » by d-train » Mon Jul 2, 2018 9:59 pm

How did the Lakers have $9M to sign Rondo? Was it cap room or an exception?

Cap room. Renouncing Randle took his cap hold off the books.

According to the awesome Capulator (shamsports.com), Lakers had $48,644,153 cap room after renouncing everything. That amount wouldn't allow them to sign LeBron, KCP, and Stephenson.

So, if you stretch Deng, that gives them $58,443,689 cap room, which works for those players but leaves less than $6.4M more cap room. $9M is more than $6.4M, so something is wrong with my cap math.

I see there is a room exception of $4.4M. It works if you use this exception to sign Stephenson and use cap room to sign Rondo.

So, LeBron, KPC, and Rondo were signed with cap room. Stephenson and McGee were signed with exceptions. And, Deng was stretched to make more cap room this season and next.

They didn't need cap for KCP I don't think. And they didn't technically sign anyone yet due to the moratorium, so can time everything to sign them in the right order. Deng hasn't been stretched.

According to the Capulator, Deng will have to be stretched or Lakers don't have the cap room they need to do the announced deals. Go to the Capulator and check it out.

it would depend on how they order transactions.

To be clear I'm seeing:

Sign KCP to his deal, renounce all cap holds and they've got around 48M left. Lebron is about 35. So 13, minus Rondo's 9.

They first have to sign LeBron, KPC, and Rondo because they need cap room for these players. No matter what order you do it, they have to stretch Deng or there isn't enough cap room. Then, they can sign Stephenson, and McGee without cap room using exceptions.

You must be forgetting to add in the rookie contract.

I'm using the capulator.

1. Sign KCP using Bird rights.
2. Renounce all free agents.
Go from there.

I see what I did. I deducted KPC twice. So, Lakers can still make more cap room.

The error in the math stems from the following statement: "According to the awesome Capulator (shamsports.com), Lakers had $48,644,153 cap room after renouncing everything." That is not correct. Once everyone was renounced, you would have had the remaining cap room at $59.8M. If you showed $48.6M, you didn't renounce everyone. Simply hit RENOUNCE ALL and it's quick and easy to see.

1 Renounce all holds and you have 59.8 room left (with 5 empty slot charges)
2 Then sign LBJ for 35.6M of that room (replacing one empty slot charge) and you have 25.0 left ( (with 4 empty slot charges)
3 Then sign KCP for 12M of that room (replacing one empty slot charge) and you have 13.8 left ( (with 3 empty slot charges)
4 Then sign Rondo for 9M of that room (replacing one empty slot charge) and you have 5.6left ( (with 2 empty slot charges)
