DPE's, TPE's and Hard caps

Post#1 » by Prokorov » Fri Feb 19, 2021 4:54 pm

Hello all. sorry if this was awnsered somewhere but had some cap related questions:

1) can you combine a TPE or DPE with players/picks in a trade, or does it need to just be the exception for a player? Are their any restrictions that apply with using exceptions in trades?

2) If a team is over the cap and/or tax does using the MLE hard cap them? if so, does the hard cap only trigger when they use the full MLE or does using a poriton of it also trigger the hard cap.

Q - 1) can you combine a TPE ...

A - You can't combine a TPE with anything.

Q - Are there any restrictions that apply with using exceptions in trades?

A - There are all sorts of limitations on using various exceptions. It depends on the situation, and which exception. See www.cbafaq.com for various details, where you can use Table of Contents, Index, or a word search to find more info on exactly what you need.

Q - 2) If a team is over the cap and/or tax does using the MLE hard cap them? if so, does the hard cap only trigger when they use the full MLE or does using a poriton of it also trigger the hard cap.

A - By MLE, I will assume you mean the non-taxpayer MLE. Using any part of the non-taxpayer MLE creates a hard cap.

IMO it's better to think of them as the full (or hard cap) MLE, and the no hard cap MLE. Using the hard cap MLE invokes the hard cap for the rest of the NBA year. Using the no hard cap MLE does not invoke the hard cap. It really has noting to do with being a taxpayer or the tax line, it's only about the hard cap so calling it a taxpayer MLE just confuses people.
