in the Blazer forum we are discussing trying to use cap-space to get Avdija to sign a contract extension before he becomes UFA. His current contract, which decreases each year is great steal but is also a major problem for an extension
setting aside the practicality of the Blazers actually having any cap-space in the next 2-3 years
(and keeping in mind the standard extension would be 140% of his 11.875M salary in 2027-28)
if the Blazers are using cap-space to extend Avdija, does his entire new base salary have to come from cap-space? or would the Blazers get a 'credit' for his last salary?

Re: Using Cap-space for an Extension
In a renegotiate-and-extend, only the current year salary can be renegotiated (and only upward). The old salary would end up being erased and a new salary (as negotiated) would replace it.
