Injured player exception

Post#1 » by daddyfivestar » Wed Feb 6, 2008 6:19 pm

Anyone know,

Can a team trade a player (ie Tony Battie) for whom the team received an injury exception?

If so, does the new team get that exception?

Can it carry forward if the player is out for more than the 1 season?

I don't know of any rule that says a player who has been thus designated can't be traded, although in practical terms it's unlikely anyone would trade for a player with a long term injury.

I don't see how the acquiring team would get the exception. All injury exceptions are granted on a case-by-case basis by the league, and I would imagine if they thought teams were just sending injured players back and forth to generate exceptions, the league probably wouldn't grant them.

"Teams are not allowed to trade for disabled players and then apply for this salary cap relief. Only the team for which the player was playing when he was disabled may request this relief."

That is slightly different...that's cap relief (not an exception...the player simply comes off the cap) for permanently disabled players. Injury exceptions are different creatures.

To answer the original question, yes, a player can be traded even if injured and the team gained a DPE for that player. The new team wouldn't get the exception (if unused). It won't carry forward -- it lasts a limited time, and would expire before then.
