Wilcox, who will be an unrestricted free agent in 2009, said he would like to reach a deal on a contract extension before training camp, but it's unclear if the team will negotiate.

Two years ago, he had hoped to sign a five-year, $62 million deal before settling on a three-year, $24 million contract that was described as a "win-win deal" by his former agent, Jeff Fried, and former general manager Rick Sund, who negotiated the contract.

Ok, how can he get an extension going into the 3rd year of a contract, I thought extensions were only for 5-6 year contracts?

First of all, only contracts of four years or more can be extended. Wilcox signed a three year contract.

Secondly, an extension cannot be signed until three years after the original contract was signed. This summer Wilcox will have only completed two years on his current contract.

I hope Wilcox isn't planning on becoming an agent when his playing days are over.
