BYC1 effects on and S&T??

Post#1 » by basketballwacko2 » Mon Jul 28, 2008 12:39 am

I've had some disagreements with a few people about the effects of signing a player and then trading him example being lets say team A wants to sign a guy from team B, team B matches the offer and then trades him to team A. Does the player become BYC1 as soon as he is signed prior to the trade or does the Team A get him and then he becomes BYC1?

Sorry if this has been asked before I didn't see it in the listing. I think the BYC1 kicks in as soon as he is signed by his current team. now for a veteran like a maggette that wouldn't apply, but for guys like Okafor and Josh Smith.

Your scenario offered (team A wants to sign a player from team B, team B matches the offer and then trades him to team A) implies a restricted free agent situation, and violates all kinds of rules, so it can't happen.

But in general ...
1. BY kicks in when a player is signed using any form of Bird rights and gets a raise bigger than 20%. That applies to ALL players.
2. That applies to the signing that is part of a sign-and trade deal.
3. That applies to players coming off rookie contracts and 15 year veterans alike.
4. Once a BY player is traded from his old team, the BY designation is erased for all future transactions.

BYC evaluations are not imposed upon teams under the cap and are only relevant in trade situations, which seems obvious enough. But if a team signs a player to a large deal that would enact BYC considerations due to the raise amount but stays under the cap and wants to trade that player, the transaction is not prohibited by BYC clauses at all

I presume current fan S&T interest concerns the Bobcats, Hawks, and Bulls.

Charlotte could get something done pretty easily with Okafor, I believe.

Atlanta seems like a candidate to get something done with Smith if, at any point, they can get the Childress hold off of their cap and limit Smith's first year salary to about $10 million or less. I may be off on this, let me know.

Chicago, even with a cap hold from Gordon, seems capable of lots of options with Deng.
