Walter Herrmann's status

Post#1 » by unstandable » Wed Aug 13, 2008 12:43 am

Walter Herrmann was a restricted free agent entering the offseason, but there was never any report that the Pistons made him a qualifying offer, which suggests he became unrestricted. He just re-signed with Detroit to a one-year deal for $2 million. This will be his third year in the league, which would suggest he would again be a restricted free agent next offseason, but would the fact that he didn't get a qualifying offer this summer (if true) mean that he would instead be unrestricted next summer?

Also, if he wasn't given a qualifying offer, would that make him a Non-Bird free agent next summer rather than full Bird?

No - you aren't automatically renounced if you aren't given a QO. This is an oft-made assumption, but it's not the case. Herrmann will be a Larry Bird free agent next year, having spent 3 years without changing teams as a free agent. And Detroit will also have the option to tender him a QO and make him restricted if they want to.

(Note: that all goes out the window if Herrmann is traded. But he has to consent to any trade involving him.)

Why do you say that? If he's traded, is he not a RFA for his new team next summer? And does he not have full Bird rights?

He signed a one year contract and will have full Bird rights at the end of the year, so he has that Devean George/Vlad Rad thing going on, whereby he has to consent to any trade, and loses his Bird rights if he does. If that haapens, he can still be an RFA, but a non-Bird one.
