About qualifying offers

Hello guys, I know you have missed me.

Thanks.

I have a question. Recently, I have read that the Bulls have signed Demetris Nichols to a 'partialy guaranteed' one-year contract. Before that, I know he was tendered a qualifying offer worth about $850,000.

The question is: If he has taken that qualifying offer - it has to be fully guaranteed, right?
It doesn't make sense that he took another one-year offer from the Bulls that is partially guaranteed and therefore bypassing the qo.

What do you think?

If Nichols accepted the QO
....it had to be for more than the minimum
....it was only guaranteed to the same percentage last year's contract was.

It's possible last years deal was partially guaranteed. Or perhaps last year and the QO had no guarantees, and instead of signing it the partial guarantee was gained by being negotiated by Nichols (or his agent).

I am kinda a lost here Gump.

Even if Nichols deal was partially guaranteed last year, since he was signed before the season started, his deal became fully guaranteed in January. He finished the season earning all of the minimum salary for that season.

What's your point?

My point was quite clear. You asked a question, and I told you the answer.

I'll spoon feed it to you one more time, and then you're on your own.

The "everything is guaranteed after January" is quite irrelevant to the terms of his contract as written. Obviously EVERY player who's a RFA ends the prior season being paid in full. But what matters for the QO is how much Nichols prior year was or wasn't guaranteed on paper, not how much of it he was ultimately paid.

So as I said before ...

Corrected: Nichols contract for last year was not guaranteed.

Cleveland wanted him that badly?

Cleveland wanted him that badly?

He was originally drafted by New York (where a couple hundred thousand is meaningless). NY waived him and Cleveland picked him up off of waivers.

If it was the original deal from NY, then are you SURE it was fully guaranteed?

NY very openly was wanting him to go to Europe, and lacked roster space for him, so why would they have incentivized him with a guaranteed contract with the Knicks when...
a. they didn't have to, and
b. they really didn't want him to accept the contract

Perhaps it became fully guaranteed after a team negotiated stated date in the contract that happened after the waived him?

Or maybe you are applying logic to the most illogical GM in the land?

They had Freddy Jones non-guaranteed 3.3 mil contract they could have waived and got him back or replaced him for a vet minimum...except zeke loves him...

After further research, I found out my initial statement was incorrect. The contract he signed with the Knicks was non-guaranteed. Therefore his QO would also have been non-guaranteed.

He wasn't supposed to sign that Knicks deal. They didn't want hm to, at least.
