Yet Another Lebron James Salary question

When James signed his current contract, he could have had two more years that were offered by the Cavs. There was no financial benefit (not a penny) to be gained by signing a shorter contract.

Do you understand how the NBA CBA works?

If LeBron took the max length contract from the Cavs, he would make $16,378,325 in 2010-11 and $17,686,100 in 2011-12.

If LeBron opts out in 2010 and resigns with Cleveland, he can make $18M+ in 2010-11 and $19.89M+ in 2011-12, or make $18M+ in 2010-11 and $19.44M+ in 2011-12 with some other team.

The financial benefit of a shorter contract isn't a penny. But it is 3.5 million dollars, which I would consider a large sum of money. Maybe you would not?

This is not accurate. He will not make more in the first two or three years of his next contract than he would have made if he had taken the extra years on THIS contract.

so who is right?

is it true that lebron actually stands to gain nothing financially by opting out b/c the following 2 years on his contract for after 2009/2010 would have beem equal to what he'll sign for if he does opt out for 2010

i also think that the person saying he wouldnt gain anything is also under the impression that he'll sign to a new team....so leave what the cavs could offer out of this and just go for the other 29 teams

Wouldn't surprise me if Nike sweetened his endorsement deal conditional to him signing with the team of their choosing. Also would probably be able to add more endorsement deals if he were to sign with a bigger city team. I'm sure Cavs can offer him similar money to anyone else, but possibly not the exposure. Not really fair for league equality, but may be the way it is.

I think LeBron will be eligible to sign a new contract for around 18 Million in 2010 which is more what he would have gotten from the fourth year of a max six year contract.

That is because he will have played seven years in 2010. After seven years the max salary will be 30% of the salary cap. He signed a max contract which kicked in after four years in the NBA at 25% of the salary cap.

So I figured out two scenarios, one where he signed a 6 year deal and then resigned with Cleveland again. And another where he signed the 4 year deal, opted out after the 3rd year, and signed with a different team. As you'll see, in every year he'll be making more by doing it this way rather than signing the longer deal right away.

Stays with Cleveland
07/08 - $13,041,250
08/09 - $14,410,581
09/10 - $15,779,912
10/11 - $17,149,243
11/12 - $18,518,574
12/13 - $19,887,905
13/14 - $20,882,300 (extension)
14/15 - $23,074,942
15/16 - $25,267,584
16/17 - $27,460,226
17/18 - $29,652,868
18/19 - $31,845,510
Total - $256,970,895

Goes to Another Team
07/08 - $13,041,250
08/09 - $14,410,581
09/10 - $15,779,912
10/11 - $18,600,000 (new contract - guessing $62Mil cap)
11/12 - $20,120,000
12/13 - $21,640,000
13/14 - $23,160,000
14/15 - $24,680,000
15/16 - $25,914,000 (extension)
16/17 - $28,634,970
17/18 - $31,355,940
18/19 - $34,076,910
Total - $271,413,563

^^ Wouldn't he make more money by doing what he's done and then signing with CLE? They have his bird rights. Also, IIRC, there's a new CBA coming in that could see the max salary rise.

^^Or, after a few more years of an economic depression, the max could sink.

Yes, which is why he's going to do that and leave everybody pissing in the wind. You heard it here first. Or second, depending on if you've heard it elsewhere.

I think he'll sign another three year extension with Cleveland.
