There seems to be a plethora of transactions lately by teams looking to save Luxury Tax or completely avoid it. Perhaps we could discuss all things related to the LT in here.

One of the things I wanted to bring up was the Toronto cap situation, specifically Jorge Garbajosa's buyout. I haven't seen anything to indicate how much Jorge's buyout was for. But, Bryan Colangelo may have given us some insight when he said the following while dismissing the Josh Howard for Bargnani trade rumor: "I have no deals of significance that are close to being completed or imminent, but later today we will announce a small tax-related deal"

So if Toronto needed to trade Hassan Adams and his $711,517 to avoid the luxury tax, then we can get a good estimate of the amount of Jorge's buyout. Currently I have Toronto's cap at $68,072,924. Add back Adams $711,517 and then subtract that amount from $71.15M and I come up with $2,365,559. That would be the minimum of Garbajosa's buyout, and assuming the Adams trade does get the Raptors under the LT, then the maximum would be $3,077,076. So I think it is safe to assume that Garbajosa got between $2.4M to $3M in his buyout.

I don't know Garbajosa's buyout amount either, and I really bloody wish I did (HINT!!!!), but it was reported that, before the Raptors signed Voskuhl, they were a mere tiny smidgen below the tax threshold, as in literally about $1,000. They held off signing Voskuhl for as long as they could, but eventually they needed the extra man, and so signing him put them into the territory. But Voskuhl's pro-rated amount was less than Adams's salary this season, so dumping him gets them back under again.

It would appear, though, that Garbajosa got most of his money. For Toronto to be that close, he'd have had to.

You know what's funny is that looking at your website is what was the main motivating factor in my creation of this post. But I didn't want to just say hey Sham, here's some potential info on Garbajosa's buyout....anyways, seems like you already have a pretty good idea of the amount.

Edit, how about we just make up a number and go with it, I say $2,940,000. That fits in pretty well with what you were saying above. Unless of course somebody in the know could help us out ...

A question about Moon and Solomon, though: don't they each have 1 year of NBA experience heading into this season, and therefore count as $711,517?

Or will they have 2 years of experience by the time the luxury tax is calculated, and therefore count as $797,581?
