Usually negative-deserving comments are more polarizing than neutral or plus-deserving ones,and when there's polarization there's division,which means people are going to vote in well defined clusters,and the most dominant clusters will have more power

How about just an "I'm indifferent towards this opinion" button?

Indeed. I think it's cool if one can see both how many upvotes and downvotes a post has. If one post has a lot of both, it means it's controversial.

With the Reddit model you see the total sum only, I prefer the first option. Don't know if any site does that.
