When I click "Compose New Message" on the User Control Panel authorized is misspelled authorised

Both are correct, although "authorised" has more of a British background. We just use "authorized" far more frequently here in America.

Kind of like when somebody spells 'apologize' as 'apologise.' It's still correct but looks weird to Americans.

phpBB comes in British English (or the proper english for everywhere but the USA) and only with that language.
You have to explicitly download and install the "English (United States)" language at http://www.phpbb.com/languages/
Presumably RealGM is sill using that language, or it's your default.
