Spyware on RealGM?

I've had no problems. But I would suggest if you're using Firefox as a minimum I would have installed McAfee Site Advisor, NoScript and Flashblock add-ons. I'd also suggest downloading a program called Spyware Blaster. It edits your hosts file with common spyware sites and cookies that it blocks automatically.

I reloaded Spyware Blaster and Mcafee Site Advisor on this machine, but I will check into the other add ons, thanks.

Still wish someone in authority would address these concerns or if anyone at all could give me a low down of exactly what is happening. Truth be told I was not going to come back here, but it is the best basketball forums around, shame to have such a great boon be turned into #$%@ because of some stupid add vendor or some such...

Something was trying to download to my pc from realgm just now. Don't know what it was cause IE gave me warninga and I backed out. I guess this thread is being ignored on purpose.

Realgm has some annoying ads (basically a audio/video clip running in the background), I made a post a few days ago to see if they could get rid of them. Been getting them alot today and decided to see if an admin had addressed my post....but I can't find it..... I can only assume they chose to address it by deleting it. Oh well, it's realgm's loss.

We removed the video ad and checked into all of our networks without finding anything harmful coming through. There are cookies that are served through the ads, but that's the same as you'll find on NYTimes.com or ESPN.com and aren't harmful. We have eliminated some of the advertisers we work with over the past few months without any evidence, but simply to be on the safe side since they were newer.

Yea, I've had problems too. I use Google Chrome and I always get the red warning page. Yesterday something tried to start downloading on my computer, but obviously I knew not to accept it.

Fix this ish please RealGM.

Me too . .Chrome spits up the Red Malware warning page, not very often but several times per week. (Im on here a lot)

For example, page 42 of this thread detects a malware issue:

Is it an ad? Can someones Sig or Av create an issue?

Ive had the same problems, and i am actually relieved to find that others are encountering the same things.

Ive had 3 different computers crash because of this site, all infected in similar ways, and ive lost lots of data. Ive been trying to convince myself that it wasnt this site, but i am sure of it now.

It starts off slowly and progressively gets worse to the point where i have to reboot the whole system.

Hopefully something can be done.

These are essentially false warnings. The uploadho is from a user's avatar, which is a gif file and contains no spyware. Anytime you go onto a page with that user, it will appear, so we'll work to get any of those taken off.

Nothing bad is coming from the advertisements.

Thanks for finding the time to address these matters, hopefully they can be cleared up and you wish to be diligent about your users security because this is a great site and I'd hate to have to stop coming here.

I see that that a few threads were made in the Basketball area of RealGM forums, and it seems a lot of basketball posters are here as well. Does this make any sense?

EDIT: Yes it does, i read a thread further down the line in this section that explained RealGM's main focus is basketball (Good.), sorry for my ignorance!

The last 2-3 days only while on RealGM I've been getting redirected to download a malware antivirus and the only way out is to start task manager and close firefox. Something did download on me one of those times but I was unable to find it.

If you are having problems you should try blocking both normal cookies and flash cookies.
RealGM loads up over 100 cookies when you log in. Most cookies are harmless but it if you are having malware problems this a prudent thing to do. Remember that disabling cookies in your browser is not enough. You also have to block flash cookies too or they will all come right back.

Cookies have absolutely no impact on what might be loaded. Only the site that places a cookie on your computer can read the cookie, meaning it's only sharing information with itself. A cookie is simply a small amount of text (usually only a few characters) that a Web site can save on your computer and later retrieve, such as your username, or some codes so you don't have to login all of the time.

Disabling cookies or deleting same only increases the annoyance on a user when they have to login each time.
