General NBA Discussion: Locked Threads

Post#1 » by W_HAMILTON » Tue Mar 15, 2011 4:43 am

I don't know how to approach this...

...but can mods please look more at policing individual behavior rather than simply locking entire threads?

As a fan of a small market team, it always seem as if something regarding our team or its players is posted in the GB, it will get locked. Inevitably someone will say something stupid or mock someone (if just for the simple fact that they DARE post in the GB about a non-big name team), and then a mod will come along and lock the entire thing.

Yet, it seems in situations with more popular teams, individuals may be censored and/or warned, but the threads continue on unless the thread's original purpose was blatent trash talking.

Why is there a double standard? Even if it is not intentional, the effect is still there. Instead of shutting off conversations about these lesser talked about teams, why not just dish out the warnings that seem to be common in other threads talking about more popular teams?

I'll try my best to keep to explain this.

As a fan of a minority team myself, I too rather enjoy the discussion about my team when it arises on the General Board. I do however find myself locking quite a few of these threads also, regardless of what favoritism I have towards it. This is however why individual boards are useful.

It's rather simple, it's a hell of a lot of work to keep the General Board on track and considering it's current state some sacrifices have to me made aka most threads that turn into flame wars. The ability to lock a thread often helps to avoid multiple unnecessary warnings and suspensions that would usually follow.

You're going to find that quite a lot of the threads relating to major teams are locked anyways, and it's very rare that any threads that get out of hand are allowed to continue.

I'm not exactly sure where your "double standard" idea is coming from. As mentioned earlier, any thread that starts to get out of hand is usually defused quickly. Most of us have the same policy, so without examples you'll have to forgive me for not understanding where you're coming from.

I will reiterate though, whatever is required to keep the General Board under control is what will be done.

Yeah, maybe if you showed us some specific examples this would be easier, because I haven't noticed this bias either (and, like Gremz, I'm a fan of a small-market team, relatively speaking).

As far as the locking goes, like Gremz said, we're hoping to get the GB to the point where discussions don't devolve into flame wars so frequently. Right now, that requires stopping threads in their tracks before they go off the rails. Sometimes, keeping a thread open and doling out a half-dozen warnings just isn't feasible. But the mods are hoping that eventually we can foster a better environment on the GB where discussions stay on track more frequently and we don't have to take action as often.

Sorry dude, but after speaking with the other mods we came to the unanimous decision that it's not small market teams we despise, it's just the Bobcats. Ergo, all Bobcat related threads will automatically get locked from here on out even if (and perhaps especially if) they are about Bobcat Goldthwait.

Locking threads is out of control, this isn't some presidential debate. This is a online forum. We should be able to talk about what we want to talk about. If we want to discuss which nBA players are the dumbest, we should be able to do so without it getting locked.

When the majority of posters can show a sense of maturity then things will change.
