OT: RGM - Shout Out Against Racism!

Post#1 » by Blade_Runner » Fri Sep 17, 2010 3:13 pm

I don't know how this would work, but can the mods do a site wide shout out/rally against racism and make a RealGM wide statement that racism isn't cool. Just like the million man march or board roll call - one day. Then take that and get the NBA to do one of their commercials...

Casspi Mural Defaced For Second Time

A mural of Kings forward Omri Casspi has been defaced for a second time.

Sacramento police are hoping that any possible witnesses will come forward after a swastika was drawn on the mural for the second time in a week.

Casspi, who is Jewish, is the only NBA player born in Israel.

The most recent incident comes after a $1,000 reward was offered by the Anti-Defamation League for information leading to an arrest after the mural was defaced on Sept. 8.

Agree with the above, but maybe it's better to not bring attention to a few haters in Sacramento?

It's a good message, but i don't think the responsibility of this board. If it were, there are lots of other worthy causes that might beg for equal time. I do agree though; the defacing of the Caspi mural is despicable - people are either very unaware of what that swastika really means, or they are just cruel people at the core

Religion has no place in sports, and racism has no place anywhere.

I just yelled "I hate racism!" in my office. Someone down the hall actually replied "So do I!", so maybe the movement is spreading. I hope that helps.

Come on, you can't be serious.

There would be a huge drop in NFL touchdowns if receivers stopped giving thanks after each score

You are a good helper. You've inspired me to fax a random person in my company's Regina office with the same message.

We will conquer this, Mr. Fairview.

Religion is as real as the boogie man.

I agree with this 100% but I will change one thing about it and that is that Religion has no place anywhere but in your own homes/prayer halls(churches/mosques/sinogogues et al)

As an Israeli who's grandfather escaped a death camp and hid out in Romania while millions other Romanian/Polish/Russian/German etc jews were dying.. it hurts to see neo nazism still occuring and people ignorantly placing swastikas over a mural is a defamation not only against Omri Casspi but of the entire Jewish nation and what many of our families went through.. Jews worldwide still experience a lot of anti-semitism, there are documentaries showing people in Montreal swearing at french jews living there today..

Many may disagree with what Israel is doing, but no one has control over what race/culture/religion/country they are born into.. and an entire group of people shouldn't be represented by the decisions that a small group of people make..

Also one note.. I encounter many people who use the word "racism" when referring to hate crimes against jews.. but Judaism is not a race..they did not hate on Omri Casspi for being white.. so "racism has no place" is an inaccurate term - Anti-semitism would be more appropriate

This is absurd that people are so unable to look beyond religion at who somebody is. I myself am Jewish, though growing up I had best friends who were "Persian" (as he refers to himself), Christian, as well as those who were of visible minority who were black.

Bigots who don't get called on their bigotry tend to become bolder in their actions.

They came first for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up.

I think Its not even about religion in this case, Casspi was born in Israel, only one of his kind in the NBA. It is unfortunate to see hate crimes in the time of the century.

Shout out!

Against...let's call it hate-bigotry.

That whole question of whether being Jewish is a matter of race, religion or culture can go on forever.

Judiasm, and Islam, became a race once people started identifying themselves with it over the countries that they were born in. A lot of Arabs and Israelis do not consider themselves as white, yet they are not a visible minority by appearance. It's tough to label people with colours, as there is such a grey area with that, so it's understandable when someone simply refers to themselves as being a jew or a muslim rather than white or brown or whatever.

"Anti-semitism" is a more inappropriate term to describe someone who is against Judaism than "Racism" is.

A lot of people don't know this but Arabs, Aramaeans, Assyrians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, and even Maltese are semetic peoples as well. For some reason, the term "Anti-semite" became synonymous with "Anti-Hebrew", when it actually encompasses the whole group of semetic people. I always found it funny whenever an Arab person was accused of being anti-semite for hating on Israelis.

I wish people read more books than watched tv.

Can you choose not to be Jewish even if you're born a jew?

Can you choose not to be white?

I can't even bring myself to believe that people like that still exist. You have to be seriously messed up to literally hate people based on their race, religion or culture.

I am an Israeli and it really disgusts me when I hear about the Casspi mural vandalism.
