OT: Doing an assignment on RealGM

Post#1 » by atlsun » Fri Sep 24, 2010 10:30 am

Hay team doing an assignment on realGM, was hoping Canada could help me out.

1) How does RealGm makes its money.

2) What are the costs associated with the business? Do the moderators get paid. I assume the there is no or very small variable cost associated with the business.

I was wondering how does RealGm makes its money. The two methods I can think of is advertising and data processing services. I was talking to my lecturer about this today and he said forums could make money by making deals with say Nike to sell their gear or sports memorabilia. I found that interesting but does that actually happen?

One of the ways realgm makes money is through its licensing of professional version of the trade checker to NBA teams

As said above, RealGM has a Pro Version of their Software that is licensed out to quite a few NBA Teams. The Trade Checker here is just a VERY lite version of that one.

RealGM also makes a small amount of money through Advertising.

Costs are VERY high. As with any major website, Server and Bandwidth Costs are usually through the roof.

ad revenue must be higher than forum costs, otherwise, why bother?

Exposure. ;)

The Pro Side of things likely tries to make up the difference.

Server costs are through the roof, but earnings from advertising on a site of this magnitude easily exceed the costs of running the site - especially with many features being turned off (such as PM's and searching) and the limitation on avatar size and signature size.

OT:Doing an assignment on realgm (part 2)

Post#11 » by atlsun » Fri Oct 1, 2010 1:28 am

Hay Canada, doing an assignment on realgm and was hoping Canada could help me out.
I am not sure how the website charges it’s clients for advertising, How is the charge determined? Is it determined in terms of the amount of traffic that the website gets?

Regards

You don't have to ask Canada, and Google (or AOL) has everything you need.

If this board represents Canada, we're fudged.

Most ads (and I'm guessing this is true for RealGM) are pay-per-eyeball...they get a set amount for every pageview. However, they don't contract directly with the companies whose products are advertised, but with an ad network who supplies the ads...that's why we occasionally (okay, more than occasionally) end up with ads that are extremely annoying and sometimes downright malicious. GoogleSense is one ad broker used; I don't know the others because self-sensorship.

Oh the charge is ok, just my all encompassing life and eternal soul. But it's worth it, to know what I know before the beat writers do. hehe, or to at least tie them.
