Appeal of Warning

Post#1 » by Marlo Stanfield » Sun May 20, 2012 5:03 pm

Link to thread in question: viewtopic.php?f=6&p=31866294#p31866294

I'm not sure why PMing Mods to appeal a suspension is not allowed (maybe too many hot heads), so I decided to post this in the suggestions forum.

I feel like these warnings are completely unnecessary and biased. The Mod who reported everyone is clearly a Chicago Bulls fan, and even more of a Michael Jordan fan. To me, it seems like he got mad that people didn't feel like reading a thread to further enhance the image of his hero, and trash the image of LeBron James. The warning issued to me was by a Global Moderator, but I think they issued it simply because it was requested by a fellow moderator. I have a feeling that if a regular poster threw a similar hissy fit and reported everyone the thread would simply have been locked and nothing more.

My biggest problem is that people come into these forums to relax and chat about basketball, while also being able to have a little bit of fun. These gifs are just another form of expression. I don't think you'll find too many people who will argue for LeBron James over Michael Jordan in the first place. And to add to the problem, many threads are "derailed" after the first post and not even locked, much less warnings being issued to posters.

Add that to the fact that most of the posters in that thread had similar notions, and enjoyed the "Did Not Read LOL" gifs and it seems like there was some biased moderating taking place. Had we known that a warning would be issued for something as harmless as a gif, we probably would not have posted it.

I feel like if this moderator had a problem they could have simply locked the thread. It's not like people became hostile, or called names, or posted inappropriate images, etc. Now 90% of the posters in that thread have a warning for something that was completely harmless.

And don't get me wrong, the majority of moderating on RealGM is completely fair and unbiased (even though it may not always seem so). But to me, this situation just seems like a fan putting his Bulls fanhood over his moderating duties.

P.S. I'm going to assume that "oaklandwarriors" was also issued a warning for calling fellow posters "retards" in that thread. Or did they get away with it through a little more biased moderating? Because I know for a fact that degrading fellow posters on RealGM is an instant warning.

It actually is not disallowed. Not sure where you got that from. Just click on the name of a moderator and look for the PM function. Add a subject/title and type it. Or, as you did in this case, make a thread here. Just saying in general.

The fact that said mod is a Chicago Bulls fan has nothing to with the repercussions that followed. He simply saw the thread as the first among the GB mods so he took action. If it had been tsherkin, who issued the warning(s), or me, it would have happened without the request of another moderator. It has nothing to do with Morten Jensen being a Bulls fan. I also don't really see the point you're trying to make, seeing as the original post was clearly in favor of Jordan. Furthermore, none of the .gif-replies made anyone think that they argued against what the OP presented. Those were merely attempts to show the laziness of the posters who posted the .gifs. Also, while it's a pain in the ass to issue warnings to so many bad posts, it sometimes has to happen because, if it's not done, it will take overhand. Sure, it sucks for you and the rest of the posters who were issued a warning but a violation is still a violation.

We certainly don't want to cut out every bit of fun on the General Board but you got to understand that posting those .gifs is really unfair to the OP who took some time to make his points. Imagine if you spent about 15-30 minutes (if not more) to make a thread like this and got back nothing but joke replies. Having fun is one thing but at the expense of a well founded thread is another.

Also, while you may not be aware of it, it clearly states that posting one liners etc. which derail a topic lead to warnings.

- Users Must Make Constructive posts - When you make a post, please do not just fill up the page with a bunch of non-constructive one-liners. It drives the thread off-topic. Moderators will take action if too much of this is going on for pages on end and users do this on a consistent basis.

-No more smile emoticons that serve as your entire post in an argument, and no smile emotions allowed to be used in a baiting fashion."

-No One-Worded Slang posts (Ex: Kaaahhhnnn, U Mad, IBTL-line/gif, pics/gifs of facepalms, things about LeBron's hairline etc) These are not constructive posts and will be considered "Derailing Discussion".

As I said earlier, this has nothing to do with Morten Jensen being a Bulls fan. All he did was making a statement that posting .gifs like that is not allowed on the General Board. One could argue that it was an example that was being set at the expense of you and others but, as I said above, a violation is still a violation. Particularly after seeing the amount of similar posts after a well thought out OP.

I haven't checked it, yet, but if it hadn't been done, I will issue a warning to him.

Edit: taken care of!

Thanks for the reply Basti and Howard Mass! Sorry for the late reply, someone suspended me for 3 days on top of my warning for whatever reason.

By the way Howard Mass, how do I contact you? I'm still new to this, sorry if it is obvious.
