Idea: A forum dedicated to the Xs and Os.

Post#1 » by KnickelandDime » Sat Aug 11, 2012 6:05 pm

LIke the title says, how about adding a forum specifically devoted to talking about the X's and O's? I'm a big fan of the NBA but moreso the game of basketball itself. I'm always trying to learn more about the side of basketball that only the coaches really have to worry about but make just as much an impact as the personnel? If anyone has any books to reccomend to learn about that aspect, I'd love to hear them.

I would love that. Too much focus is put on the meaningless stuff like tweets of star players. Instead, we should focus more on the game itself.

Maybe you can start with this book.

The General Discussion board can include that sort of talk whenever you like. That's kind of what it's for, actually. That's the type of conversation we encourage you to begin and facilitate as often as possible.

The General NBA Forum would be the place for Xs and Os.

If it got popular enough, it could be spun off into it's own forum.

I want to bump this just to remind people that this is exactly the kind of conversational material that would improve the quality of discussion on the GB. This is the kind of stuff that will be much more intriguing than the umpteenth edition of "my team is better than yours, hahaha, you'll suck this year" and the other repeat threads we get.

Tsherkin,

Very good point.

I definitely agree and the new policy is already improving the forum.

Here is the thing. it would be way, way too bogged down by the casuals chiming and and obviously not getting the material. it would digress the topic.

I am a basketball manager for my University. While I(or nobody for that matter) don't know it all about the Xs and Os, but I do know more than the average Joe and some people who have been watching NBA for years. I have seen this type of "discussion" try to take place in general discussion. there are a few that absolutely get it and know what they are talking about, then there are the majority that simply don't.

In a separate forum, we will still see that, but to a much lesser extent

No, a separate forum will be used by few and seen by fewer.

And the conversation will eventually be bogged down by the same garbage. The new policy on the GB is helping to deal with the nonsense posters, so we'll see what happens.

If you've got that kind of knowledge and experience, generating intriguing conversations with new threads is a great way to support the GB.

I completely understand the philosophy behind it. but I still feel it will be bogged down in those threads. making a new thread will also better organize the General Board. I understand you guys feel the general board is for basketball in general, so all discussion about basketball can be put into there. However we do not allow player discussion there, I feel Xs and Os, while not at the same volume, could work in a smaller sub-forum.

I love REALgm but its obvious that this site caters more to casual fans, which is fine. it' what makes this site so great. But during the season we see all types of levels and trolls through the forums. having a specific forum for philosophy/strat/Cs and Os sub form would be appreciated and would be great to direct that focus of basketball in a new forum

I have no problem making topics about that stuff in general, but there will no doubt be people saying LA is running Triangle sets while its obvious they would be running some Princeton type of action.

There aren't enough threads about such topics to justify another forum. If that changes, then the conversation becomes something more intriguing, right?

But right now, we rarely see those threads to begin with and posters are lazy enough about using other forums like the PC Board.

Lakeshow,

I am with tsherkin here.

This is something for The General NBA Forum but if it gets enough interest, it could be considered for it's own forum.
