Regarding avatars

Hi, I tried to put a gif in my avatar... it wasn't an animation, just gif extension, but I got the message that I need a jpg. I convert it into a JPG and says it's too big (90 x 90). And that's the thing I don't understand, how it is possible for many users to use a huge big gif without resizing? If I click in "show image" in one of those, it shows a animated gif 200 x 200 (for example) with 1MB of size. Why are some users able to do that kind of strange magic?

Von,
What site were you trying to host it at?
For your other questions, I have forwarded this to someone who could better answer your question and hope to have an answer soon.

It is hosted on imgur, which is a permitted host. It's a stupid image,
http://i.imgur.com/qEYOMUys.jpg (jpg version), 12kb of size... so I don't know why I stumble upon these restrictions when many users have juggernauts in their avatars.

Can you link the original picture?

I had a similar issue with my sigs.
Use tinypic.com. No other image hosting site works for me.

Ahh!
Our Avatar Limit is 80 by 80.
This is why it did not load.
Hope this helps.

Not true, Howard. I've put avatars in there that are bigger than that and it's worked fine. Not sure what he's doing wrong, he needs to link the original picture so we can help more.

Well, we are going to correct this if this is true.

It automatically makes the avatars 80x80 after all is said and done.

Let's see, original pic is
http://i.imgur.com/qEYOMUy.jpg (I deleted the .gif some days ago, but it's the same thing).
Following Shpati21's advice, I tried to upload a huge animated gif to tinypic (1mb size). I got the same restrictions messages.

Von Oswald,
Maybe try another pic and see what happens.

Personally, I think it'd be nice if RealGM increased the avatar size. 80x80 is really tiny, and I think it helps users personalize their accounts. Especially for the people who have GIFs of dunks, plays, etc., it becomes impossible to see what their avatar actually is.
Just a suggestion, albeit unrelated to the OP.

Ok, I found out the solution. This field:
"Specify the width and height of the avatar, leave blank to attempt automatic verification.", it must be filled by putting 80 x 80, even if the avatar is higher than the permitted resolution. Then it will resize. A strange mechanism.

Kind of agree, 80 x 80 was OK for 2004, but nowadays with better bandwidth and high-res screens avatars could be bigger than that. 100 x 100 is the standard in many places.

What happened to the avatar size? I changed it today and tried to change it back to my previous avatar that was 100 x 100 and it wouldn't let me do it...The 80x80 makes my current avatar look weird...
