Forum Chat Room

Howard and admins maybe we could get a chat room set up for special events like draft and big play off games. Their is major support behind it at least in the two hour span a thread was open in the general board and had it stayed open I'm sure votes would have said it all. The users want it so lets do it!

I second this. That previous topic mentioned the ESPN Daily Dime, which IF the mods want could have the chat moderated like that. CelticsBlog also has a chatroom for special events such as games, the draft, etc.

Either way, having a chatroom for playoff games or the draft on RealGM would be fantatstic.

I agree.

I'd like to also point out the forums were basically unaccesible for almost 10 minutes around the end of game one of the finals due to board overload (it's happened quite a bit as of late) so this could take the strain off it.

I support this, but as I said in the original thread, you've got to moderate it constantly. One way would be to have a post minimum for who can get in to the chat room. Like 1000 posts.

Looks like the demand is here Howard and other admins! Keep in mind that poll in the general board was only open for like 2 hours early in the morning and still got 25 yes and only 2 no. User support is there.

I support this and didn't vote in the original post on the GB.

Keep pushing it guys. If the people demand it they will have to at least consider it!

We are making some more changes in the next phase to our forums.

This is something we have weighed bringing back but it is too early to say what we will do here.

Moderating it would be difficult and we also like the current game threads.

We will see what happens and take this under consideration like we do many things.

I would just say to try and weigh it more on user demand at this point. I mean if you want to get a full scope actually keep a thread in the GB open (yeah I know not basketball related but it will give you the best idea). The thing about moderation is if you have a chat available at certain times like lets say the finals then I am sure mods will be around because they are fans too. That and you can always only let certain user classes in.

Ad revenue (if a big concern) can be kept by using a chat that is integrated into the site and people not having to go to a program to connect.

Thanks for listening Howard :)

User demand is an important consideration, but it should be mentioned as a reminder that the forums are the core focus of this site from a public standpoint and that a chat room necessarily detracts from that focus. It is important to the RealGM team to take the necessary time to properly evaluate something like this, so as Howard said, it will be considered and discussed in depth. Meantime, this thread here is the place for users to make known their interest in such a feature; the GB is the incorrect forum for that, and any future threads on that topic will be locked in the same way as was the first.

The availability of mods is one concern; simply being around is not necessarily the same thing as having the time available to sink into monitoring an active chat, nor does it address the link between the boards and the chat room in terms of moderation consequences. There is a lot to discuss as far as this is concerned, and filtration of users permitted to use the chat room is one concern (and a contentious one, at that).

Thank you for your time and input; details will be furnished as far as RealGM's plans for moving forward with(out) a chat room as they as they become available.

The issue that I have with this is that the forums almost always as of late have stopped working when big games have come up. Last night I wasn't able to even view the board after the game. A chat room would mediate that and it wouldn't retract from the boards necessarily since they don't work/if you integrate them into the site through a java client (for example) and have advertisements on the side like normal.

ReturnOfMVP3,

We have a solution for the forum thing so the chat might not be as neccessary.
