About thread locking

Question: I've seen threads locked because they belonged in a different subforum. Why aren't such threads moved instead? It's standard practice in some other sports forums.
Suggestion: Maybe the mod who locks a thread could give the reason for locking as the last post of the thread? I know the author can PM the mod (or does he/she even know which moderator locked it?), but usually many more readers want to know the reason, not just the author. I think it would be in everyone's best interests if the reason was always publicly available. It would serve as a reminder to other users not to repeat the same mistake.
