Why does RealGM use this awkward format?

I visit many message boards and really enjoy the community here. However the layout has always been different and frustrating to navigate compared to, say, my car forum websites. They seem to use vbulletin format and its always been a simpler tool for browsing, posting media or searching thru archived post.
Ive never seen this format used anywhere else. Been posting here for over a decade but still find it cumbersome
