How come when you register you have to have a non-free email account? I know that that can just send an email asking to activate your account, but why?

Less spammers. With free email accounts, someone can just create a ton of them and use them to spam.

Why not just require members to do one of those Captcha things or w/e they are called. You know the words and numbers in the boxes that you have to type in order to register for a site like MySpace. Why not just have one of those?
