How come mods don't give reasons for locking a thread?

Mods have been extremely inconsistent and contradicting. If they abuse power, that's ok, but at least give a reason why you lock them.

It's good to see that you look at the board before posting a thread to see if there was another thread on the topic you are posting.

I think most moderators here try to give an explanation when they lock a thread. As Flash pointed out, though, sometimes it is painfully obvious why a thread was locked. In those cases don't expect an explanation. Unfortunately there are also times when we get sidetracked and just forget to leave an explanation in a lock (we're human, it happens). If you really can't figure out why a thread was locked, send one of that board's mods a PM and ask for clarification.
This space needs to be filled with a new sig...but I'm too lazy to make one.

whats the difference in locking a thread to just deleting it? what is the reasoning behind the decision to delete a thread.

If they delete a thread it usually has stuff that's against the rules in it.

If a thread is irrelevant, redundant, or has been taken off-topic negatively, then it will likely be locked, but if a thread is blatant trolling or grossly obscene then it will likely be deleted.

A thread might contain good info or deserve an explanation. That's why most of the time threads are locked.

Also, by locking a thread (and giving an explanation), the logic is that posters can see the thread and see why it got locked and hopefully not repeat the same error as the last guy,

for that reason i understand (but i prefer the modify by the mod and lock), but for the other reasons, i would prefer the lock. it is very annoying to read a thread one day and come back next day wasting time searching for it and having no idea at all what happened to the thread, like reading something without ending :(

Sometimes they don't even tell you why they banned you. Don't ask questions and keep your eyes to the front!

I'd give an explanation of the threads I've locked, but "Because I felt like it" stops sounding fresh after like 15 times.

Because many of the threads created on the Raptors board are so inexplicable as to make it impossible for me to respond rationally, I tend to use a combination of interpretive dance and odd images found on my hard drive.

The interpretive dance seems to have little effect, unfortunately.
