multi-forum threads?

Post#1 » by DelaneyRudd » Fri Mar 14, 2008 5:38 pm

An interesting thought I had was it would be a neat experiment to have a single game thread shared by the two teams forums. Sure, there is the inevitability of flaming, but if rules re enforced, and just plain acceptance that some crap will be flung it can be more interesting than just the regular play by play game threads that are on most forums.

Best case scenario:

Team 1 fan:That is a flagrant foul 2!
Team 2 fan:That's just a hard foul, he went for the ball.
Team 1 fan: His head isn't the ball
and so on

Worst case scenario:

Team 1 fan: You call that a foul?
Team 2 fan: Shut up homo/stupid canadian/mormon/hick/etc.

I think the second scenario can be avoided with good moderating, so does anyone think it would be entertaining enough to be worth it?

We tried that between the Wizards and the Pistons boards during pre-season. (Actually, was Cowology's idea).

It really didn't work very well at all. The "visiting" board members didn't understand why they had to venture off of "their' home turf. Moreover, much of the interaction between board members during games has a lot to do with individual boards' institutional memory and style.

So if some Wizards fan were lamenting about our own coach's substitution patterns, you'd want to talk about how he's been doing that for years and so-and-so was hurt by it. Then the other team's posters are thinking to themselves - WTF are these guys talking about.

IN short, good idea in theory. Not-so-good idea in practice.

That's a great point about fans discussing their own teams language so to speak, especially coming from a fan of a team that hasn't made a significant management change in 25 years. My idea probably isn't probably software possible either as a redirect wouldn't work. It would need to be 2 perfectly mirrored threads that bump and post count in unison.

I think that would be great, but only if there was constantly a mod online there.

Even then, I just don't think it would work.

Pine basically mentioned everything I was going to say. We tried it (using two groups of posters we figured were the most likely to interact positively). Now, nobody got into any confrontations. That wasn't the problem. But there were two separate discussions happening at the same time. One discussion was between Wizards fans and the other was between Pistons fans. Neither team's board members were interested in discussing the other team.

Then when it was over, the numerous complaints surfaced, and they all made sure we knew just how much they hated the idea....

It wouldn't work. The passion we RealGMers have for the game would cause our homerism to always complain if something doesn't go our way and vice versa, which would become annoying to the opposiing team and will turn on our flamethrowers.

i'm guessing that wouldn't be the case, the lakers-suns game for instance could get pretty nasty

Oh yeah - that's just asking for warnings/suspensions/bans each night. It's setting people up for failure, in a sense.

That's why I mentioned that the "test groups" were Washington/Detroit, because we at least have some mild-mannered fans who wouldn't try to kill each other. And even in that case, it just didn't work.

It was a really good idea, but unfortunately, it's not meant to be.

I think it can work software wise, decide on a thread that will be used on one of the boards, sticky it, and then move it to the other board, leaving a shadow topic of it.

I think people need to interact with their team fans though.

e-trash talkin FTW!

I think it would be interesting if there are good posters/loyal fans that actually know something about their team and aren't just their to make comments like:

OMG DID YOU SEE THAT 3 POINTER!!OMGZ!! BTW, STFU *insert other team's fan username*

This is why we have chat rooms and general NBA board.
