When will Private Messages become unrestricted?

It's been like 2 years now? I thought they were just suspended on a temp basis.. The point of having to send a message to the MOD for him to send it too another member defeats the purpose of a "private message."
If they were getting abused, couldn't you develop some sort of abuse system where people who are reported 3 times get their PM"s restricted instead of the entire REALGM community as a whole?
Just looking some serious insight on this. Thanks for answering my question in advance.

I think closer to 4 than 2 years, actually.
IMO, there's a ton of unserious posters around on every board that likely would make a bunch of trouble through the PM system. It might even attrack spammers if RealGM opens it up again.
However, it would be nice to be able to send a PM and not always go through a mod.

I think that people should be able to earn their PM powers with people with equal PM powers. Such as..
For minimum posts, let's say 500 posts, and one year and they can get their rights.
For minimum posts, let's say 1,000 posts in 6 months, and they get their rights.
You can make posters aware of rules, such as cyberbullying and other things like that, and you can have one mod or small group of mods overseeing that no real abuse is going on. If people get warnings by mods, you can take over their rights automatically for 1 month, three offenses they get suspended and permanent removal of PMing powers.
Things like that.

It would be really nice if people who make the decisions around here could shed some light on this..
Even though I greatly appreciate the two posters above me, who gave their input in.

I PMed a mod about this once, and he told me that our predecessors abused it, and that the PM system likely won't be back. He said something about users continuing flamewars via PM after their threads were locked.

I hope it never continues for regular posters. It's just trouble waiting to happen due to many abusing it during the past.

I have been here for years and do not remember PM system being available to everybody.

Could you, or another mod, elaborate on how it was supposedly abused.

These are the type of PM messages that I still get as an active mod...

No need for PMs, i like things the way they are, if you want something just PM a mod, thats works for me just fine.

Like others have stated, we disabled private messaging for regular forum members because it was being abused and we have no plans to allow regular users to send each other private messages. But, if in the future we can come up with a something that works for everyone we will think about bringing back the feature.

How about something like you have to be here longer than a year and have a X amount of posts?

5,000 non off-topic posts

Seriously though, I wouldn't want to check in with a billion messages with spam or insults in it. I'd like to have a PM system, but if it means getting messages like that, then it's not worth it.

There is no problem with this method. It would stop the spam and allow us to have pm's back. Or even a system were we could turn off all non mod pm's

I would rather have X amount of time than X amount of posts. There are enough post padders on RGM.

abused in what way? in terms of personal wrongdoings (insults, serious threats, teaming up with other posters to cause havoc, etc) or in term of automated wrongdoings (spam)?

ACtually, there is a problem with this method.
Instead of stopping the spam, these posters will only be encouraged to spam their way to the post limit they need to get to before being able to spam through PM.

And a day after they start spamming that entire year and X amount of posts were wasted because they'll get banned. I doubt you'll find many people who will put in that much time simply to be able to spam via pm for a day or two. I really don't see why it's such a problem.
