Question about really long threads (100+ pages)

Why are some threads that become very long (say 100+ pages) locked, only to open a new thread as a continuation? Why not just keep the original thread open?
For example the "rookie watch" thread on the general forum? It's on part two now. I assume at some point it will get locked and a part 3 will be created.
I'm not against it, just want to know the reasoning behind it as I find it strange.
I don't believe the performance of the forum should be affected by long threads. Since we still view the thread one page at a time. A new thread takes up just as much resources in the database as just continuing the old one (actually a little more cause now you have to keep track of a new thread, but the increase is negligible).
Just curious
