Player Comparison Board

I'm a regular on the PC board. Lately, it's been infested with the same Kobe and Lebron (and to a lesser extent Wade and Jordan) threads that caused problems for the General Board earlier this year. It's really making the PC board too repetitive, with the same posters (homers) posting the same thing, page after page.

IMHO, the PC was/is the best board on RealGM. Can something be done to maintain that? Can something be done, similar to what happened on the General Board, where if the dialogue starts to become too repetitive about the same players/teams (kobe/LBJ/Lakers/Wade/Cavs...you get the idea), and the posts are just homers attacking other homers, that those disruptive posters get warnings, the threads closed, and a thread is posted explicitly stating to tone it down with that stuff?

I agree, I made a comment about this not too long ago and was warned for it so I have backed off the stance lately...

First—thanks for the comments here. This is the kind of thing that needs to be brought up. Just so people know, this is being discussed by the PC board moderators and others moderators/administrators at RealGM.

The problem is that, by definition, the PC board focuses on comparisons, which means the biases and prejudices of posters are actually meant to come out. On a team board, there's a sense of "we" and "us." There’s none of that on the PC board…and there can’t be. Very few people compare two players that they like or think are equal. Most people have an agenda or an axe to grind. But that’s built into the theme of the board. The problem is determining how far to let people go.

I think the bigger issue is one of civility. There are posters that are deliberately abrasive on the PC board. I, personally, think you have to have a little give and take. I can’t imagine a Player Comparisons board that doesn’t allow anyone talking smack at all. I admire the people that defuse situations with humor rather than anger—and I mean real humor, not sarcasm and a couple of   emoticons.

Keep in mind something else, too…the best thing to do with an irritating poster or thread is to let the thread die. I know that’s tough, because we see people that are peckerheads and are posting ridiculous information and the natural response is to confront and/or argue with them. The feeling is that whoever gets the last word is “right” or “making their point.” I don’t think that’s true. But every time we let ourselves get up in a pointless comparison, or respond to someone’s anger—we’re making the problem worse.

That being said, we’re all talking about how to make things better…and looking at what others are saying both here and on the PC board. Believe me, “problem” posters are as obvious to mods and RealGM administration as anyone else.

Alright, thanks for the response. I understand how the PC board is a different animal compared to other boards and needs to be treated a bit differently. Looking foward to some sort of solution. Thanks again.

Just to bump this thread... There are a handful of posters on the player comparison board who are really getting out of hand, they basically try and turn every debate into a Kobe vs. Lebron vs. Wade lovefest, and have recently taken to name calling and other inflammatory tactics in a number of threads... So I was curious if anything is being done to get rid of such posters as:

NYKnicks87, LebronCavs, and Twenty23

I mean there really is no way posts such as these:

It's getting out of hand, I completely agree with ronnymac. I've pretty much lost interest in RealGM because this board started going downhill, I used to come on here and post consistently probably every single day (the majority of my posts are probably on the PC board). But the last 6-7 months it's completely fallen apart, I used to love this board so much because it'd teach me a lot about basketball and the history of it from a lot of great posters like TrueLAfan....but yeah, used to be the best board on RealGM, but the past 6 months, it's gone completely downhill.

Co signed. I also was a usual on the PC board but have shifted to the soccer board lately. There are several low quality posters who flame, derail threads and destroy every attempt of wholesome discussion.

If you put a moratorium on Lebron vs Kobe comparisons specifically, I think it would remedy the problem. That may seem a bit draconian, but I don't think much is gained by debating the comparison between those two players as it has been debated ad nauseum on here for awhile now.

The MJ vs etc. arguments noted above by others are inevitable and usually run their natural course. However the Kobe vs LBJ arguments seem to leak into every comparison and lead to inflammatory comments from either side that are clearly degenerating the board.

Just a suggestion.

To an extent I agree with this, but there are good and legitimate reasons for Lebron vs Kobe vs Wade arguments and shutting down discussion is a bad thing generally.

There just need to be a few house rules that are applied to postings especially around ad hominem attacks and people's homer arguments not providing facts and reasoned argument to back up the smack talk.

Unfortunately, this would require more active moderation, which is regrettable on several levels.

Hi,

I dont post too much, but I lurk on realgm everyday. I to use to absolutely love the PC board, but it has gone down in the toilets the last 6 months with all the Kobe/Lebron/Wade stuff. It is completely taking the fun out of reading the board. I use to learn so much about old players who I never saw, but now Kobe/Lebron fans and haters turn every thread (even if it isnt about them) into the same Kobe/Lebron nonsense.

I think one of the worst mistakes made was allowing people who were banned from the general board to post on the PC board. I have never understood that decision. Obviously that isnt the main factor, but it does contribute!!

Thanks for this thread!

Solution: have a LeBron/Kobe sticky, make all LeBron/Kobe talk stay in that thread.
