J.J. Redick Has Confidants Asking Him If He's Sure Leaving Media For Lakers' Job Makes Sense

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jun 14, 2024 4:36 pm

J.J. Redick will interview with the Los Angeles Lakers for their head coaching vacancy this weekend. While the Lakers will interview Redick, there will also be an interview being conducted by the candidate of the employer.

"I have no doubt that J.J. is going to have a strong performance because he's been preparing for this for a long time," said Brian Windhorst on Friday morning. "I think the question that's being asked here is how much should J.J. really want this job? And that's one of the reasons why I think there's people in his life, in fact, I know there's people in his life, who have said 'Are you sure this is the opportunity you want? That this is what you want to leave for? Because this is such a challenging job.'

"Head coach of the Lakers is one of the four or five most desirable coaching jobs in all of sports. You're talking about head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, manager of the Yankees, manager of Real Madrid...The Lakers are on that list.

"But J.J.'s got to hear from their franchise, from Rob Pelinka what their intentions are. How do they see life after LeBron James? How are they going to spend with these aprons in this new environment? What are their plans for their roster in this offseason? What can they do to help increase from their seventh place finish?

"This isn't just a one-way interview. J.J. Redick has a great job. He has a great future. He could wait for three or four more head coaching opportunities in the next year or two, but that's one of the big things that is going to come out of the conversations over the weekend, I would expect."

Good question. He is on the rise at ESPN. How fast will he fall in LAL?

He would be absolutely stupid to leave his cush ESPN job to go coach the Lakers. That franchise is too unsteady at the moment for JJ to take the risk. If he truly wants to be a coach, he should wait for the RIGHT opportunity and not only take the FIRST opportunity that presents itself.

I hope his family and friends get through to him. WAIT IT OUT, JJ.

Not sure why - with a growing family and an expanding media mini career - JJ wants to join the Lakers.

He wields so much more influence to shape the entire league with how well he's transitioned into the media space.

Virtually building a basketball media empire.

Yes, being a Lakers coach is a DREAM job for any basketball aficionado - but does it override the fact that JJ has a better future when he is just starting off his media path?

Hopefully someone talks him off jumping the cliff.

The answer to almost every question like this comes down to: MONEY.

He makes like $3 or $4 million at ESPN. He’ll make $10 or $11 million with the Lakers. He can always go back to ESPN after he gets fired like Mark Jackson did.

Sure that's the cynical take, but that assumes that he doesn't care which job he does as long as he secures a bag.

On the other hand if he really wants to have a successful coaching career then the Lakers job - with it's intense media scrutiny, aging roster and declining prospects, perception that he will be subservient to Lebron, and Pelinka's history of cycling through coaches every year - is probably not the wisest position for him to take as a rookie coach.

If I'm Redick, the Cleveland job(just one example) - younger team, better team, less pressure - looks much more promising than the Lakers for long-term success.

This is simply not true anymore. The Lakers haven't landed a "superstar" coach since D'Antoni. No one really wants this job. Too toxic on the court and the leaderhip off is a clown show.

I think JJ's ambition to coach has very little to do with money. He might get 3x's the money as a HC but he could potentially have a much longer career at ESPN, and with a whole lot more free time.

Which "Superstar" coaches are on the move?

Being HC of the Lakers will only build more leverage for his back-up broadcasting career.

Since Kobe tore the achilles late in the 80th game of the 2013 season, the Lakers are 29th in regular season wins (2nd last) in the league.

11 seasons and 6 of those 11 years included Lebron James on the roster. Five of the seasons also had AD and even 1 title.

Yet finished behind every team except Sacramento.

Double digit wins behind the Wizards and Pelicans.

Fewer wins than the Hornets.

This is not a well run franchise.

It's be funny if the Lakers had another coach turn them down...

Lakers are bad place for an early career NBA coach - high expectations, over the hill, limited assets to get better.

Best coach for the Lakers would be a very experienced coach who doesn't really need the work anymore. Someone to try a quick turnaround - someone like how Larry Brown used to be.

His people are right to question if this is really the job he'd want. It's not just ESPN job, he also has his own podcast that's pretty big. Don't think he'd be able to continue that. Lakers coaching gig may pay more now but long-term, his media job and his company might end out being worth a lot more and with a lot less stress and scrutiny and a lot more stable, too. Plus, have to imagine his position as a head coach is already compromised due to his relationship with LeBron from that podcast they did together. Very easy for other Lakers players to think that he's just a pawn taking orders from LeBron James.

Maybe he likes getting paid to not work because that's how it's going to end up.

He's broadcasting in the Finals right now... he doesn't need leverage to stay at the top. If he steps out of that role and his replacement is as good or better, he may never step into it again.

ive heard all this before

when ucla coaches were in and out like a revolving door from the mid 80s to present everyone said the ucla job is one of the top 5 jobs in college sports,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,until they all turned it down

the laker job, like the ucla job, is a 'PRESTIGE" job that does not promise job security

it looks good on a the resume. people dont care if you do a good or bad job, it's THE job.
