Paul George Likely To Opt In And Request Trade If Changing Teams

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jun 21, 2024 1:44 pm

Speaking on ESPN's Get Up, NBA insider Brian Windhorst said Paul George and the LA Clippers could be headed for a breakup. The Clippers haven't budged off their offer to George, and the All-Star wing doesn't seem inclined to accept it.

Windhorst said that the focus shouldn't just be on cap space teams for George as a free agent. Instead, he said it's more likely that George will opt in and request a trade, if he's changing teams this offseason. That would increase the pool of teams that could acquire the veteran wing, beyond just the handful of cap space teams this summer.

The Clippers also reportedly don't believe that George wants to leave Los Angeles. They are believed to have offered a similar deal to the three-year, below-max extension that Kawhi Leonard signed with the team during last season.

He played with Harden last year and I thought Harden had kind of a bad experience with this exact same move.

The fans had a bad experience, Harden ended up right where he wanted and got to fatten up in the meantime.

I'm unsure if PG is a Thibs kind of guy. I admittedly have not watched enough of George to know his full game, but if he doesn't give 110% on both ends of the floor, and is not capable of playing 48 minutes a game at a clip, he isn't going to be a NY Knick.

Thibs and PG13 wouldn't work together imo.

George has far too much injury history and wouldn't hold up long being abused for Thibs' notoriously high minutes.

Knicks should only do it if George agrees to a one year max extension with a team option for the second year. That would keep George in NY for at least two seasons. Trade Bogi, Mitch and picks for George, and let OG walk.

Translation: No-one else is offering him more money than Clippers, so his only other option is $48M over 1 year.

Thibs would love him... and I doubt PG would be interested.

PG definitely wouldn't be interested in that and LAC wouldn't be interested in the players you mentioned... If PG did want to go to NYK, a S&T with OG and picks makes the most sense.

I'm not sure why PG thinks he's worth more than Kawhi. He proved he can't lead a team in the playoffs all these years. No other team will give him the supermax. /shrug

This would be great for NY because the Knicks wouldn’t lose OG for nothing.

So you think Kawai would do better if healthy but without PG? I don't see it.

Agreed. In the event PG opts in, it is hard to see if any team will want to trade for him only to pay him $50m per going forward.

So, the most likely scenario is PG opts in only to find no team wants to trade for him. He then becomes a free agent in Summer '25.

I mean it's not Paul George's fault that Kawhi accepted less than the max. You can't expect someone to take a paycut just because someone else on the team did. Especially when the owner of the team is not only the richest owner in sports but top 10 richest people on the planet.

There would need to be some additionla salary going back to LAC. I'm really interested to see what the market for OG is. He isn't a max player but it sounds like he's expecting something close. He might be disappointed.
