Pistons Claim Paul Reed Off Waivers

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Jul 9, 2024 9:18 pm

The Detroit Pistons have claimed Paul Reed off waivers. Reed will enter Year 2 of a three-year, $24 million contract signed with the Utah Jazz in 2023 that was subsequently matched by the Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers waived Reed in order to create additional cap space.

Reed appeared in all 82 games last season with the Sixers, averaging 7.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 19.4 minutes.

Why? This guy is a minimum player at best. They should’ve let him become a free agent and signed him to the minimum on a guaranteed four year deal. That still would’ve been less than what they will now pay him this season. Nobody was picking up this bum’s contract.

There’s a chance he wouldn’t want to come play for the Pistons once he became a free agent. Now they secure his services for the next 2 years.

Naw... Players don't go straight from playing 1,500 minutes on an NBA contender to playing in China. Reed might be a role player, but he's an NBA level role player.

And didn’t he go off for a crazy game against Jokic when Embiid didn’t play? Almost led them to victory lol.

Wasn’t Nick Nurse supposed to coach up Reed to new levels? That was the big talk heading into last season.

Huge for Philly. They don't wind up with any dead cap now.

He was non-guaranteed, that money was off of Philly's cap as soon as they released him, regardless of if anyone picked him up or not.

In fact, the Pistons could just release him in December and he'd be off their books for the remaining part of the year and next year too.

It's just a unique contract in that regard, so Detroit claiming him had no effect on Philly's cap.

Nick Nurse is so overrated, it's hilarious. He can't develop Reed and forgets about using Buddy Hield in the playoffs until it's too late. His team performs worse than Doc Rivers against an injury riddled Knicks squad... and people still praise him. It's wild. Never seen anything like it. He's the Teflon Coach.

Nurse needs a super-stacked team, and a lot of injury luck to his opponents, to win in the playoffs.
