Karl-Anthony Towns: History With Tom Thibodeau Gives Us A Little Head Start

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Oct 4, 2024 1:38 am

Karl-Anthony Towns believes his prior history playing for Tom Thibodeau will give the New York Knicks an edge as he is worked into the team just as training camp begins. Towns played for Thibodeau early in his career with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

"I think it gives us a little bit of a head start," Towns said of his relationship with Thibodeau. "I know the offense he likes to run. I know the way he likes to play defense and what he expects from his players."

Thibodeau said he was excited to have the opportunity to coach a more seasoned version of Towns.

"He's gotten a lot more experience. He's now been deep in the playoffs and knows what that's like," Thibodeau said. "As much as you try to prepare for something like that, until you go through it, you don't fully understand what that is. His understanding is so much further along now than in his second year in the league. And his skill set is so unique that it fits well with everybody."

Thibs coached MIN while KAT was on his rookie deal and had a supporting cast of Wiggins and Teague. This is a different KAT and a different roster. I might argue that this roster is better at every position, including center because KAT is better. I would also argue that Thibs has grown as a coach.

And still, didn't they make the playoffs out west with that roster? So point is, it should only get better from there. And you're right, they've both grown. Both have become better and I'll never forget what Phil said while coaching the Bulls. Some conflict is good.

I agree 100%; situation matters. I think KAT has been underrated for a while now. His numbers declined because he was willing to take a step back for the team. NYK definitely got better with this trade. With the recent additions of OG and Bridges, they will be a force in the East.

I also think Randle has been underrated (and misused) for a while. MIN can use his play making. DDV is probably overrated based on the last half of last season, but he is clearly better than his contract and brings MIN some much needed help off the bench. It's possible that both teams got better from this trade.
