Grizzlies, Nets Have 'Hard Feelings' Over Dorian Finney-Smith Negotiations

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jan 3, 2025 5:01 pm

The Brooklyn Nets held a bidding way between the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies when they traded Dorian Finney-Smith. There were "hard feelings emanating from the both the Grizzlies and the Nets for the way it played out," reports ESPN's Brian Windhorst. Brooklyn traded Finney-Smith to the Lakers for D'Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis and three second round picks.

The Grizzlies were reportedly close to a trade with the Nets for Finney-Smith with them sending a top-17 protected first round pick in 2025 as part of the package. The Nets, however, were going to send back a second round pick. Brooklyn also would have took back the salaries of John Konchar and Luke Kennard.

Memphis has also been linked with Cameron Johnson, who the Nets have maintained will go for a higher price than Finney-Smith.

The Lakers gave us a better offer at the last minute, and Brooklyn took it. Memphis can only blame themselves for having hard feelings over such a lowball offer.

Trading a late MEM 1st like the 25th pick for our early 2nd which will probably be the 37th pick is hardly sweetener. Then, we have to absorb Konchar's when we're trying to maximize capspace this summer? No thank you, someone else will love that offer, not us.

The Nets leveraged the Grizz to get an another offer by leaking the full offer to the media. The Grizz still have those two players on the team.

Also keep in mind Marks likely didn’t give Kleinman an opportunity to counter offer which downright makes it a snake move.

Nets already have four 2025 first round picks. Makes little sense to take on salary to get a 5th very late 1st instead of saving your cap space and getting 2nds. At some point you CAN have too many 1sts.

You can trade them to move up on draft day. Or trade this year's pick for a future pick. It's really hard to have too many picks.
