Nets Have Set High Asking Price For Cam Johnson, Nic Claxton

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jan 17, 2025 1:29 pm

Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson was tabbed by NBA executives as the player most likely to be traded ahead of the February 6 trade deadline. Johnson's Nets teammate Nic Claxton also received mention, as Brooklyn leans into a rebuild.

However, Brooklyn wants a real return for both Johnson and Claxton.

"The Nets asking price is high," one league executive said, referring to both Johnson and Claxton, "and they [have made] it known they don't feel like they have to trade them now. But if they're helping them win games, they'll trade them or put them on the bench."

Nets GM Sean Marks has already traded Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith this season. Marks also reacquired Brooklyn's own 2025 first-round pick from the Houston Rockets ahead of the season. The Nets are expected to continue to move veterans to prioritize their lottery position for the 2025 NBA Draft.

I wonder if/when the Thunder will pony up. I get where they are coming from, but had they gone after either Gafford or PJ Washington, they probably come out of the West instead of Dallas. One first, five seconds and a body would be enough for Cam, wouldn't it?

That depends on the 1st and the 2nds... but probably not. OKC 2nds will likely be in the 50's for the next 5 years. They might get it done with one 1st and two or three 2nds if they put the right conditions on the picks. Something like:

1st
2026 - Most favorable of OKC, HOU 5-30 and LAC

2nds
2026 - Most favorable of OKC, DAL and PHL
2027 - Most favorable of OKC, HOU, IND and MIA
2029 - Most favorable of OKC, ATL, BOS, HOU, MIA, PHX, DEN if DEN has not conveyed a 1st round pick to OKC by 2029

Dang OKC has a lot of picks! :D

Methinks the Nets want two of the premium 1sts OKC has.

Maybe best of their ‘25 and best of ‘26, or best of ‘26 and ‘27, and Presti being the Danny Ainge level asset hoarder he is, is probably scoffing at even one of them lol.

I get it to an extent, but they’re gonna wind up a farm team for a few other teams in the league when they have 5 blue chip-ish prospects rotting in the G League or their bench, and can’t afford to pay everyone because of the current CBA and their smaller market.

Then they’ll be forced to trade guys for peanuts or let them walk.

They’ll still have an outstanding core, but it feels like they’re going to miss out on the missing piece guy again if they don’t make a move for a guy like Cam, or even try and swing for the fences with a guy like Durant.
