Lakers, Hornets Each Claim Other Team Initiated Mark Williams Talks

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Feb 11, 2025 2:49 am

The Los Angeles Lakers rescinded their trade with the Charlotte Hornets for Mark Williams with both teams contending that it was the other party that initiated talks.

"This opportunity came to us," Rob Pelinka said Thursday. "Maybe it's in some sense like the L.A. housing market. Not every house is listed. And sometimes you become aware of something that's available that's not on the market. And when you see the perfect house, you're willing to go get it, even if you have to be aggressive to do it. I think that's how we looked at the Mark Williams opportunity when we opened up discussions with Charlotte."

The Hornets, in a statement issued after the trade was rescinded, framed the communication differently. "After the other team aggressively pursued Mark, we made the difficult decision to move him," the statement read.

Pelinka's own comments suggest they pursued Mark Williams and initiated trade talks. The Hornets could have just said "no one is untouchable" when Lakers asked about the roster.

Even with the Lakers aggressively pursue Mark Williams, Hornets had every right to decline to offer and to talk.

If Lakers really pursue for Mark Williams, do you think it is reasonable for Lakers to suddenly back off from the trade ?

Lakers suddenly think they overpaid? Knecht is good, the 31 FRP is likely to be a late FRP, 30FPR will not convey if Luka is here and Mark William stays healthy. This is what most frustrating fans believed. Is it an overpay if Williams can contribute right away?
