Naz Reid Expected To Decline $15M Option With Wolves For 25-26

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Feb 24, 2025 9:41 pm

Naz Reid has a $15 million player option with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the 25-26 season that many around the NBA expect him to decline to become a free agent. Reid is represented by Sean Kennedy

When Reid signed a three-year contract extension with the Wolves in June 2023, the Cleveland Cavaliers, Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs were amongst the teams expected to pursue him.

While it is unclear if Reid will be able to find a contract offer from a rival team above his $15 million option, there are expectations that he and the Wolves are more likely than not to come to terms on a new contract.

In 57 games this season, Reid is averaging 14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 27.1 minutes.

I think Minnesota will give him a contract somewhere between the range of Isaiah Joe and Malik Monk's deals last summer

Isaiah Joe - 4/48
Malik Monk - 4/77

I wouldn’t turn down my 15 mil player option if I’m only getting Isaiah Joe money lol.

I said in between Isaiah and Malik's contracts. Depends on what Reid is looking for. Stability on a long term deal with a playoff team versus betting on himself with a 1 year, 15 mil deal.

He will most likely look for 4 year 80mil and he will probably get it, especially after they let go of Towns. I still don't understand why you keep Rudy Gobert and Naz Reid instead of just Towns + someone more reliable and complimentary to Towns and Edwards, but it is what it is. Getting Julius Randle will never make sense - he is just older Anthony Edwards from Temu, so I don't expect a deeper playoff run from the Timberwolves this year, unless they get very lucky draw and injured teams.

That trade will be the reason why anthony edwards leaves the wolves. they do the same thing over and over. Garnett Love Towns and soon edwards. the organization is horrible and doesn’t know how to retain talent. they cheap af and don’t care about winning

100% agree. Like ReddOktober said, this is what Minnesota does.

Yeah same as Dallas did, getting rid of big pay players, I guess NBA is going down the toilet if teams are getting rid of their stars for money reasons. I haven't seen that happen before.

The KG trade was McHale being an idiot & trying to recoup draft picks he sent to boston while helping his buddy Ainge. KG wanted to retire a Wolf. That's why KG has refused to have anything to do w Glen Taylor all these years. RGM just had an article about how KG will likely have a new role w the team now that Glen is gone. New owners A-Rod & Lore are willing to spend $$$. Tim Connelly is a top 5 pobo. This isn't the dysfunctional wolves of old.

The KAT trade was partly a result of the repeater tax for teams above the 2nd apron. He's also missed an average of 30g the past 6 years. Pay $60M/ for only 50 rs games, horrible D at the rim & choking in WCF. The FO said no thanks.

I’m expecting something like 4 for $108 from Minnesota, and he’ll get it. He is incredibly popular with fans, and he wants to be in MIN, accepting an under-market extension even when the Wolves had Gobert and Towns. He’s also very close with Ant and Jaden McDaniels.

It’s crazy to think that Tim Connelly was going to let him walk, until generally hands off Glen Taylor made that famous phone call, telling TC to “get it [extension] done.”

dont think they will pay him more than 25m per year, so maybe 5yr 108mil , but 4mil 108 mil seems like a stretch

It's a weak class

Ingram and Caruso already got the trade and extend.
Lebron had already demonstrated he was staying before Luka.
Kyrie will decline his option and be immediately max offered by Dallas

FVV, Wagner, Jaquez all held by team options.

Kuminga, Giddey, Cam Thomas, and Davion Mitchell all restricted

A bunch of ancient guys (some with player options):
Horford, CP3, Russ, Middleton, Lopez, Batum, Gordon, Lowry, Tucker, Ingles etc...

At one time Ben Simmons was thought of as a meaningful part of this future class but washed a long time ago.

So who is the competition for Naz cap space money?

Harden (PO)
Randle (PO)
Markkanen
Turner
Collins (PO)
Capela
DLo
Caris
Brogdon
Portis (PO)
Ty Jerome
Bruce Brown
DFS (PO)
Some stand and shoot guys -- Oubre, Hardaway, Kennard, Connaughton

Others but no one who notably stands out beyond any of these names

There aren't many cap space teams but Naz is 25 and hasn't been hurt or had big decline years like Markkanen & Collins both did.

It does seem to be a prime situation for him to opt out.
