De'Aaron Fox: There Was No Trade List, There Was Only The Spurs

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Mar 7, 2025 9:41 pm

The San Antonio Spurs were always thought to be the preferred trade destination of De'Aaron Fox, but he went a step forward in his public comments to indicate there was no list of other teams.

"There was no f---ing list," Fox said. "There was one team. I wanted to go to San Antonio. So, a lot of people are mad at me, saying I handcuffed the team by giving them a destination. Well, this is my career. If anybody else is in my position, you'd do the same thing. It's not my job to help build your team. I'm not about to just go where they want me to go. I wanted to have a destination."

Fox was traded by the Sacramento Kings less than one week after reports surfaced that they would entertain a deal for him. The Kings had approached Fox's agent, Rich Paul, on January 27th that they would listen to offers. Paul informed Fox and then the Kings sought him out in his hotel room to formally tell him.

"We're sitting there trying to have the conversation, but I know what he's about to tell me because Rich had already told me," said Fox, who didn't reveal which member of the organization he spoke with. "A reporter calls trying to break the story, but mind you, our GM hasn't told me yet. So, it had already been told, even before I was told by our team."

The Kings did the right thing by him but given the attitude he gives in these statements he didn't deserve it.

Oh no the team didn't tell me first they were going to trade me when I made it clear I didn't want to be there even on a max and demanded only one destination.

It's the player entitlement era not player empowerment.

Truth! Fox may someday be as revered a PG as Tony Parker is in SAS, depending on the number of titles he wins with Wemby. But Parker was never on a max deal, which made it much easier to build around him, Duncan and Manu.

Have to consider his relationship with Brown who got fired despite Fox's protestations, have to consider the turnstile of coaches before that, have to consider FO team building and drafting foibles, even as I get it sucks that a top player wants out. We've been there...

If you want out don't expect the team you are leaving to grovel and pander to you. Regardless of the reasons why Fox wanted out the Kings are under no obligation to avoid hurting his ego at that point.

There's really no reason for you to come to his defense with a litany of excuses regardless of if he is "your guy" now. Fox and his management are acting like children dropping this information right before his new team plays his old team.

If you initiate a breakup don't expect the other side to placate you any more.

Litany: "a usually lengthy recitation or enumeration"

"a sizable series or set"

Where?

There's no need to exaggerate for effect, it has diminishing returns in its effort.

Turns out Fox had FO issues, specific ones that kept repeating:

https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/279576/DeAaron-Fox-There-Was-No-Trade-List-There-Was-Only-Spurs

So he didn't initiate but responded.

Fox isn't 'my guy'. I was surprised to read he wanted SA specifically, not surprised he wanted out. This isn't a Spurs fans specific pov.

So while a team has a right to do what is in its own best interest and does not have to cater to a player's request, it's really not 'regardless of the reasons' Fox wants out, is it? These are legitimate concerns. Ignoring them only perpetuates them. Fox didn't want out because of Wemby but because of Kings FO. Then the destination followed.

Good luck with your season.

I agree with your general logic but just because Fox perceives these things to be issues, it doesn't mean they definitely are issues. He may be correct or he may not be correct.
