Ja Morant Remained Supportive Of Taylor Jenkins, Didn't Like Grizzlies' New Offense

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sat Mar 29, 2025 12:52 pm

Ja Morant remained supportive of Taylor Jenkins until his dismissal as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, sources tell The Athletic. Morant has complained about the Grizzlies' new offensive scheme installed this season, which took the ball out of his hands and also used less frequent on-ball screens.

“Some days he looks like he’s ready to play, and some days he looks like he doesn’t want to be there … because he hates the offense,” said one source.

Morant's future with the Grizzlies was already uncertain despite the push back Zach Kleiman made publicly against the possibility of him being traded. According to two executives, the demand for Morant on the trade market could be limited.

Assistant Nate LaRoche who was the driving force behind the new Memphis offense was also fired along with Jenkins.

The brains after the new offense was that of Tuomas Lisalo, signed this offseason as a bright young coach from Paris Basketball and previously coachng in Germany for two years, being the best coach of the second European continental league.

They needed another way to score that wasn’t as dependent on Ja, especially if your all-star PF still can’t figure out how to stay out of foul trouble. This is a lot like Adrian Griffin trying to give the Bucks some flexibility on defense. Both guys appear to have just leaned too far into this. A longer training camp might be the solution.
