Nico Harrison: I Knew Luka Doncic Was Important To Mavs' Fans, I Didn't Quite Know To What Level

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Apr 21, 2025 6:26 pm

Nico Harrison had a publicly televised press conference on Monday one week after conducting a limited roundtable with select media members last week. The Dallas Mavericks were eliminated from postseason contention on Friday by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Harrison continues to receive widespread criticism for his decision to trade away Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Harrison believes if the core of Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson, Dereck Lively and PJ Washington would have been healthy, the Mavericks would have won down the stretch and the discontent over the trade would have been more muted.

"I did know Luka was important to the Mavs' fanbase," said Harrison. "I didn't quite know to what level. But, really, the way we looked at it is if you're putting a team on the floor that's Kyrie, Klay, PJ, Anthony Davis and Lively, we felt that's a championship caliber team. And we would have been winning at a high level. That would have quieted some of the outrage. So unfortunately we weren't able to do that, so it just went on and on."

Harrison continues to believe in his vision that "defense wins championships" and that the roster built around Davis and Irving will bounce back next season.

"I believe winning will help repair the relationship with the fans," said Harrison. "That's what we plan to do next year."

Maybe in the East you could be a play off team. Nico your Mavs are in the stacked West. Plus you traded... Nevermind you know what you did.

As a Houston Rockets fan I'm glad he traded Luka. Dallas never deserved his talent

Most GMs would be fired for the trade, then admitting they didn't understand the fans. If he doesn't, then Mavs ownership want Doncic gone and Nico becomes the fall guy (well, a paid fall guy).

The biggest issue and why the whole thing make no sense, is not that he traded Luka (bad) but that he only talked to the Lakers and wouldnt even let them talk to Luka (and further increase return) because they wanted to keep it a secret. They went out of their way to get a worse return than they could have got  I am tinfoil hatted that the NBA or at the very least the Lakers ownership/Mavs ownership have some shady business deal going on.

Idiotic as the best case scenario, corrupt at its very worst (if you are inclined to believe the conspiracy theories, whether it was that the NBA intervened or that ownership wants to move to Las Vegas and pissing off the fans is the best way to make that happen)

He will be gone next year, by midseason if not end of the year.

Wow...the sheer stupidity.

If you are going to say something stupid...better off to say nothing at all.

Incompetent fks hire incompetent fks. I'm not so sure he'll be gone. That decision assumes Mavs owner Patrick Dumbc**t has a functional brain. This is corruption and collusion at its finest. They are in the position they are (de facto basketball decision makers who have no business running a basketball team) not because they deserve it but because their trash egos align.

I've never in my life seen ANY franchise (let alone any quality franchise) - hell any Company (sans Bud Light), orchestrate a self-inflicted nose dive this much and THIS FAST!! It's comical at this point, hence the 'rigged' rationale.

I'll enjoy when Nico & Dumont get their karma for what they did to Dallas. Absolute clowns and they keep talking to prove it lmao. This franchise will be cursed like the Red Sox and Cubs were until fans force them to sell.

I understand Nico's job here is to be the fall guy. But how long does Silver plan to have his bullet riddled corpse take more shots? I mean, fire the guy already so he can go back to anonymity in Portland at Nike.

How the f is Silver supposed to interfere with the hirings and firings of a privately owned team?! Only the Mavericks owner/governor/board has the ability to do so. Imagine Silver just deciding Celtics are too strong and firing Brad Stevens, or kicking Sam Presti out of OKC cause they have too many picks.

Your take is beyond dumb.

You can‘t tell us nothing that Silver did not know nothing beforehand AND/OR even was involved in this travesty. The NBA finna protect their product and their assets, nobody tell them nothing what they can or cannot do. Especially not the fans.
