Luka Doncic Expected To Commit Long-Term To Lakers; Team Open To Any Contract Structure

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri May 2, 2025 3:28 pm

The Los Angeles Lakers will be amenable to whatever contract structure Luka Doncic desires as the five-time All-Star is widely expected to commit to a long-term future with the franchise, sources tell The Athletic. The organization completed the trade for Doncic without assurances he would re-sign, though he told ESPN before the postseason that he wants to stay with the Lakers.

The Lakers acquired Doncic with the understanding that his uncertain status helped them avoid surrendering their 2031 first-round pick in the trade package. League and team sources say the partnership has been "very positive for all parties," with Lakers management clearly communicating they want the Slovenian star to lead their next era.

Contract Options Create Flexibility For Doncic

Beginning August 2nd, Doncic can sign a four-year, $229 million extension with the Lakers. Alternatively, he could opt for a shorter three-year, $165 million deal with a player option for 28-29, positioning himself for a potential five-year, $418 million contract in 2028 when he reaches 10 years of service.

Doncic might also play out his current contract through 25-26 before choosing between a five-year, $296 million deal with the Lakers, or a four-year, $219 million contract elsewhere. Doncic's current deal includes a player option worth $48.9 million for the 26-27 season.

The five-time All-Star, represented by agent Bill Duffy, averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists and 1.6 steals in 35.1 minutes across 28 games after joining the Lakers. His season PER of 24.0 was his lowest efficiency rating since his rookie year.

The Lakers completed the trade sending Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick to Dallas shortly before the deadline.

Fans of other teams in denial again. I will save you the heartache: He will stay. Get it out of your system now.

Most fans of other teams are happy to let the Lakers give $300m to the Pillsbury Dough Boy.

Run from the better place to live and a team that can compete if they construct the roster properly?

No, “Run” as in “get in shape bro”.

I'm sure somebody will, but I won't. For good or bad, the Lakers can have him. Pelinka landed Luka, but he has shown us repeatedly that he has no idea of how to build out around Lebron... and now he's got two of them.
