Mike Woodson Emerges As Candidate To Be Kings' Lead Assistant

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun May 4, 2025 2:26 am

Mike Woodson has emerged as a leading candidate to become the top assistant for the Sacramento Kings under Doug Christie. Woodson last coached in the NBA in 2021 with the New York Knicks as an assistant coach. Woodson spent the past four seasons as head coach of Indiana University.

Woodson has been an NBA head coach previously with the Atlanta Hawks and Knicks.

Christie was elevated to interim head coach of the Kings in December and was retained this offseason. The Kings did not retain Jay Triano as lead assistant.

Sacramento can have him. I'm just thrilled that he isn't coaching my Hoosiers any longer :D

So you keep Christie but need to hire a real HC who can manage the team properly...

Christie had a record of 27-24, Mike Brown had a record of 13-18. Sure he could use some help but acting like he isn't a legitimate head coach is ridiculous.

For sure, nothing wrong with getting Doug some experienced ex-HC to help him out, and truly help him achieve his vision. All the guys they just let go were MB's choices.

Yeah but lots of teams employ head coach level lead assistants. He only has 4 yrs experience but seems to be good already, and he's proven he has the passion, personality and mentality to a true leader of the team. Teams that rally around a leader can be some of the most dangerous in any pro sport, the players will run through a brick wall for the coach.

Probably he is more made to be an assistant, as he did not have good stints in previous tenures with teams.
Woodson was not a good player coach or the Hawks.
May be Christie has a good relationship with the players while Woodson can be that coach behind the scenes... maybe...

Ya that's what I think the set up could be, Woodson will be the expert of strategy, Xs and Os, and make more of the crucial in game calls, and Christie the main figurehead, the vocal guy to lead & inspire them. Woodson wasn't the greatest as HC but pretty good as an assistant. Had alright 3-4 year runs with Hawks and Knicks and 2 really good years, and 2 not so good ones for both teams.
I actually thought he might've been a good choice as head coach if they didn't go with Brown instead. I was hoping for a wiser, more knowledgeable & experienced coach instead of mid-late 30s guys like Joerger & Walton were. Teams like the Kings need to go with guys who are a bit older, experts in their fields instead of young, unproven and first year guys like Joerger, Luke, McNair etc.
