Chet Holmgren, Thunder Agree To Five-Year Rookie Max Worth Up To $250M

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Wed Jul 9, 2025 1:50 pm

Chet Holmgren and the Oklahoma City Thunder have agreed to a fully guaranteed five-year maximum rookie contract extension that could reach $250 million if he hits certain escalators. Holmgren could qualify for the Rose rule provision by making an All-NBA team or winning Defensive Player of the Year. Holmgren is represented by Bill Duffy and could have become a restricted free agent in 2026.

Holmgren averaged 15.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.2 blocks in 27.4 minutes across 32 games last season with the Thunder. Holmgren returned from his broken pelvis to help Oklahoma City win their first championship in franchise history.

Holmgren also missed his entire rookie season due to a ligament tear in his right foot. When healthy, Holmgren has been one of the NBA's best young two-way bigs.

How will OKC be able to pay him (50 Mil), SGA (70 Mil) and Jaylen (50 Mil) those three are more then the salary cap in a year. Plus paying the other players.

Do you think the salary cap will increase within the next 3-5 years? Maybe OKC assumes it will.

That’s fine, but I don’t think anyone on a second contract will be retainable.

It will..BUT you have to pay Wallace, Durt, etc. Same issues with the Celtics but smaller market.

Couldn't they just give Dort an extension to save money to avoid him hitting the open market and having to pay him more?

I don't see Cason Wallace sticking around with this core as great as he is with this team. I think Topic will eventually be Cason's replacement if he continues to develop which I think he will. If not there are veterans willing to play for cheap.
