The NBA is implementing a round-robin tournament format for the 2026 All-Star Game featuring three eight-player teams, with two USA squads facing one international team. ESPN reported Wednesday that the league and players' union presented the new structure to the competition committee.
The format received positive feedback during committee discussions involving governors, team executives and players. Sources confirmed the three teams would compete in 12-minute quarter games at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles on February 15.
The 2026 All-Star Game will air on NBC and shift from Sunday evening to an afternoon start time. The event coincides with the Winter Olympics and takes place at the venue for the 2028 Summer Games, creating an international atmosphere.
Adam Silver previously endorsed the international concept in April. He emphasized the opportunity to create meaningful international competition rather than traditional All-Star formats.
"It presents an enormous opportunity for us to do something with an international competition instead of the traditional All-Star formats that we've used," Silver said at the time
Last year's four-team single-elimination tournament with 40-point target scores drew mixed reviews from participants. Several players criticized the frequent breaks during and between games, prompting league officials to explore alternatives.
The USA versus World structure benefits international players seeking All-Star recognition. Approximately 70% of NBA players are American, making it easier for foreign-born talent to earn roster spots in the new format.
The round-robin system aims to maintain competitive intensity while addressing previous format complaints. Each team will play meaningful minutes against quality opposition throughout the event.
