Kevin Durant dribbled the ball 377 times in Game 3, about 240 more dribbles than he averaged per game for the season, according to data from SportVU.

Durant played the first game since his rookie season without Russell Westbrook on Saturday.

Durant touched the ball 111 times in the game, almost double his season average.

Anyone who decries this stat doesn't understand the general value of data. Tracking something like this may lead to important developments later which build on this as a starting point. Number of dribbles might eventually be linked to time dribbling and part of an analysis of who overdribbles in a way that can be statistically tracked, evaluated and ranked.

Right off of the bat, though, when a primarily off-ball player starts dribbling a lot more, what kind of inferences do you think you might draw about that game?

Think about it before spouting off about how "stupid" a stat is.
