Maybe Silver should frickin' fix the problem instead.
People have been saying for years that most of the tanking goes away if you break the awarding of draft picks up into three tiers for teams missing the playoffs. In each tier, the teams have an equal shot at landing the picks in their tier. Then there is suddenly no need to try to throw as many games to move from 5th worst team in the league to absolute worst. Your odds of landing a higher pick don't improve.
Tier 1
5 worst teams get an equal 20% chance at landing the first through 5th picks in the draft.
Tier 2
The next 5 worst teams also get an equal 20% chance of landing the 6th through 10th picks in the draft.
Tier 3
The next 4 worst teams get an equal 25% chance of landing picks 11-14.
Then, usually by the end of January the teams in each tier are about 80% set in stone. Something would really have to go wrong for a Tier 2 team to lose enough games to wind up in Tier 1. Injuries to your star players for example. However, it just wouldn't make sense for a Tier 2 team try to tank super hard, throwing away tons of games, looking like ass to your fans, becoming a joke in the league, just to get a 20% shot at a first overall pick, who by the way, only has about a 40% chance of becoming a super-star in the league. It just isn't worth it.
A VERY SIMPLE FIX... but the owners would rather stick with their 'secret' back room draft where who knows what really goes on (some sort of draft plus auction for position?), plus they get to keep the whole tanking problem that makes the league look lame (from a lack of year round competitiveness perspective).
But ... nope.... lets publicly and financially go after the insider who merely stated the obvious halfway through the season during a meeting with his players.
Silver needs to call his own meeting, with the owners, and let them know that their business is starting to look like a joke. More like the WWE than the NBA. Sooner or later people are going to start calling it Basketball Entertainment instead of a sport. Look at what happens when you make your business/game/sport just a little too distasteful to the casual fan. You start getting massive drops in ratings and even attendance - NFL style. Do the owners really want to keep going down this path? It will cost them eventually.
Fix the fricking draft and discourage tanking with the method above.
Make referees accountable for blown calls. Even a simple coaches challenge system for non-calls or blown calls would add accountability. However, publicly shaming or firing a few refs would go a long way as well.
These two small changes can reverse the downward trajectory the league is on now and eventually help them become the premier sports league in the world instead.
Come on Silver, find a way to get through to the owners. Save this game from and for the bozos who control it. The fans will thank you if you succeed. Hey, you might even create a legacy for yourself that future generations will look back on and appreciate.
