You're absolutely right in saying the correct picks have to be made. They need a dash of luck too. For example, imagine if OKC is left with Oden at 2nd overall in 2007.
Joakim Noah, Marc Gasol, Al Horford, Spencer Hawes, Arron Afflalo and Mike Conley, Jr. are all better picks than Oden on a risk-adjusted basis in 2007. I will probably pick Oden with the 8th pick, followed by Rudy Fernandez and Tiago Splitter.
I do not know what gave Kevin Pritchard the balls to take Oden first overall given Oden's tattered injury history. He took his chance on Oden and lost big. GMs these days are a lot more cautious with injured young prospects. That's how Nerlens Noel fell to no.6 and Shabazz Muhammad fell to 14.
