I agree that it was an overpay and that they will likely live with shame and regret, but the Lakers have no way of replacing him. They did what they had to do because someone was going to give them that $179m contract. if he continues to put up 24/5/6 he will be easy to trade if it comes to that.
You have it backwards, his last contract was his max (as it says in the article), and this time is less than his max.
Nope, not backwards. His last contract was the most the Lakers could give him but nowhere near the 25% max he could have gotten anywhere else. He took a discount to stay in LAL. Nobody at that time was going to give him a max offer but several teams were very willing to outbid the Lakers.
This contract is exactly at his 25% max with 8% raises, which makes this his actual annual max, and more than any other team could offer. He did take one year less, but this is not a discount. His player option after 3 years means that he can opt out with 8 years of experience and potentially sign a 30% max. He's gambling on himself.
